Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Mike Rumbles has called on the SNP not to use the expected barrage of media coverage of Barack Obama's inauguration tomorrow (Tuesday) to bury 'bad news' stories.
In the aftermath of the September 11 terror attacks, a UK Government spin doctor sent a memo suggesting that it was a 'good day to bury bad news'.
Commenting, Mr Rumbles said:
"The SNP must not use the expected media mania over Barack Obama's inauguration to hide bad news stories.
"The UK Government has already faced criticism for its cynical policy of dumping its political bad news on busy media days.
"The 'good day to bury bad news' memo sent after the September 11 terror attacks was an extreme example of a strategy that erodes public faith in the transparency and honesty of our democracy.
"The Scottish Government must treat Obama's inauguration like any other media day. No more bad news than is usual from this government should be sent out tomorrow."
