Commenting on figures from Grampian police showing that nearly 3000 incidents were recorded in and around Aberdeen and Dundee pubs and clubs over the last year, Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Mike Rumbles MSP said:
"The scourge of alcohol related violence can only be properly tackled by creating a culture change in our society.
"New legislation alone will not be enough to tackle the underlying reasons why people drink themselves stupid in the first place.
"Alcohol related violence is taking a terrible toll on the health of the nation. We must focus on educating people from a young age to the dangers of alcohol abuse.
"Ministers must also make sure that existing laws for the sale of alcohol are enforced properly."
