The GTC employment survey was published today, showing that only 16.1% of probationers who responded to the survey managed to obtain full time employment this year, compared to 20.2% last year.
Commenting Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith MSP said:
"We thought the figures reported in last year's survey were bad but this year they are worse. This year on average 6 probationers will be chasing every full time teaching post.
"Probationers who are nearly half way through their final year of training will be extremely concerned by the lack of opportunities that await them when they finish five years of hard work.
"There has also only been a 0.4% fall in the number of respondents not employed under any form of teaching contract. This is glacial progress and just not good enough.
"Teachers and parents in Scotland have had nothing but false promises, frustrations and failures from the SNP Government.
"The SNP's report card is full of Fs - they must do better."
